The Sunshine Coast is a string of centres rather than a single city, running from Caloundra in the south to Noosa in the north with the hinterland behind it. That spread is the defining operational fact here, and any quote that treats the region as one town has not accounted for it.

Where we work in and around the Sunshine Coast

Caloundra to Noosa is around sixty kilometres and the coastal road is slow in holiday periods, which materially affects how long a job takes here at certain times of year. Brisbane is roughly ninety minutes south. We plan Sunshine Coast work around the strip rather than pretending the region has a single centre.
What Queensland law means for investigation work here
Queensland licenses investigators under the Security Providers Act 1993, administered by the Office of Fair Trading. Private investigator is one of the security provider classes in section 4, and section 9 makes it an offence to act as or even advertise as a security provider without a licence. A separate security firm licence is required to run an investigation business.
Queensland is the only Australian jurisdiction without a surveillance devices act. Listening devices are covered by the Invasion of Privacy Act 1971, where section 43 prohibits using a listening device on a private conversation but a party to the conversation may record it. Optical surveillance and tracking devices are not covered by a dedicated statute. That absence is not permission. The Criminal Code privacy provisions at sections 227A and 227B, trespass, stalking offences and the federal privacy tort all still apply, and a court will still ask how material was obtained.
The federal statutory tort of serious invasion of privacy, which commenced on 10 June 2025, applies on top of QLD law and contains no exemption for private investigators. Full detail on the QLD framework is on our Queensland page.

- Maroochydore Magistrates Court, with Caloundra, Nambour and Noosa also sitting. Summary crime, domestic violence protection orders and smaller civil claims.
- Maroochydore District Court. Mid tier indictable crime and civil claims to $750,000.
- QCAT. Minor civil and debt disputes to $25,000, tenancy and building disputes.
- Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia. Family law is federal, even where the conduct investigated is governed by QLD rules.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Sunshine Coast one area or several?
Several, and it matters. Caloundra to Noosa is around sixty kilometres with a slow coastal road, so a job in Noosa and a job in Caloundra are not interchangeable for scheduling or cost.
Queensland has no surveillance devices act. Does that make things easier?
It makes them less certain, which is not the same as easier. Without a statute setting the boundary, the limits come from the Criminal Code, trespass, stalking law and the federal privacy tort, and the operator’s judgement carries more weight rather than less.
How quickly can you start in the Sunshine Coast?
Coastal strip work between Caloundra and Noosa can usually be arranged quickly. Hinterland addresses through Maleny and Montville need more lead time, and holiday period traffic genuinely affects what is achievable in a session.
