The Coast is roughly an hour from Sydney and forty minutes from Newcastle, and the M1 is the spine of everything. Subjects commonly commute to one city or the other, so a job that starts here often does not stay here, and we resource accordingly rather than losing a subject at the on ramp.
What New South Wales law means for investigation work here
Investigation work in New South Wales requires a Class 2E licence under the Security Industry Act 1997, administered by NSW Police through the Security Licensing and Enforcement Directorate. The old Commercial Agents and Private Inquiry Agents Act 2004 was repealed on 1 July 2022, so a licence issued under that Act is no longer the relevant authority. Ask any operator what they hold and when it was issued.
New South Wales law applies. Optical surveillance under section 8 of the Surveillance Devices Act 2007 turns on whether recording involved entry onto premises or interference with a vehicle, not on filming itself, so professional work here runs from public vantage points. Tracking under section 9 requires the relevant consent. Where a matter involves an employer and a worker, the Workplace Surveillance Act 2005 adds a requirement for a covert surveillance authority from a Magistrate.
The federal statutory tort of serious invasion of privacy, which commenced on 10 June 2025, applies on top of NSW law and contains no exemption for private investigators. Full detail on the NSW framework is on our New South Wales page.

Are you actually based on the Coast?
We work it as its own region rather than as an outlying part of Sydney or Newcastle. What matters to you is whether a job is resourced for the distances involved, and we quote it that way.
What if the subject commutes to Sydney?
That is common here and it needs planning rather than improvisation. A surveillance job on the Coast that may follow a subject down the M1 is a different resourcing question from one that stays local, and we will raise it before the job rather than during it.
How quickly can you start in the Central Coast?
Gosford, Wyong and the Peninsula can usually be arranged at short notice. Where a subject is likely to travel to Sydney or Newcastle during the observation window, we will discuss resourcing that properly before quoting.
